OUTOKUMPU IMPLEMENTS CAMSTAR SOLUTION TO IMPROVE MANUFACTURING VISIBILITY AND ENHANCE CUSTOMER SATISFACTION
Leading Copper Manufacturer Turns to Camstar for Improved Throughput, Enhanced Materials Traceability and Streamlined Manufacturing Operations
CAMPBELL, Calif. (July 27, 2004) - Camstar Systems, Inc, a leading provider of enterprise manufacturing performance management systems, today announced that Outokumpu Copper Products Group of Finland has implemented Camstar's InSite manufacturing execution system (MES) in its Dutch manufacturing unit, Outokumpu Copper Strip B.V., which is part of the Automotive Heat Exchangers division. The implementation -- completed by LogicaCMG in association with Novotek, the Camstar Master Distributor in Europe -- helps Outokumpu reduce manufacturing cycle time, improve tracking and monitoring of quality data, and improve the customer order fulfillment process.
Outokumpu Copper Products processes copper and is the second largest producer of fabricated copper products with more than a 10 percent global market share. The company's main products include ACR tubes, radiator strips, sanitary tubes, strips for connectors, roofing and architectural products, and welding electrodes.
With a complex manufacturing process involving several stages and sub-processes, Outokumpu Copper Strip had a daunting challenge with collection and organization of granular traceability, and accurate genealogy of processes and materials at the plant and line level. The company wanted a flexible, easy-to-use solution that would map into its business processes, improve stock management by integrating with the company's enterprise resource planning system, BPCS, and advanced planning system, Quintiq, in order to provide real-time visibility and traceability of all manufacturing processes while streamlining its manufacturing operations.
Camstar InSite enables Outokumpu Copper Strip to collect highly granular traceability information against its manufacturing processes and materials; organize into a hierarchical parent / child relationship; expose data in real-time; and finally search and analyze the data to find underlying trends and root causes. The company now uses the solution's ability to predict adverse conditions and events, eliminating most of the causes of poor quality performance, and the cost and liability that accompanies poor performance.
"Because we produce a variety of thin brass strips that must meet different specifications, we needed a solution that would allow us to track them through the various processes and sub-processes to ensure they meet our quality standards," said Wil Klerks, Managing Director of Outokumpu Copper Strip B.V. "Camstar's InSite solution enables us to do this seamlessly, providing real-time visibility and helping us to improve our manufacturing yields. We are pleased with the early results we've experienced with the Camstar solution we've implemented."
Dave Cone, president and CEO of Camstar, said, "As a leader in metals manufacturing, Outokumpu faces its share of a very competitive market and a long list of strict manufacturing and quality requirements. Outokumpu Copper Strip relies on Camstar solutions to achieve manufacturing excellence, while enhancing customer confidence. Building upon the already proven value delivered, Camstar and Novotek will continue to work closely with Outokumpu to identify other opportunities for improving manufacturing processes and bottom line."
