Fabless Semiconductor Manufacturer Relies on Manufacturing Execution System to
Maximize Control and Visibility of Outsourced Operations
CAMPBELL, Calif. (September 7, 2006) - Camstar, the leading
provider of enterprise manufacturing execution and quality management solutions,
today announced that Genesis Microchip Inc. (Nasdaq: GNSS) has pioneered a Manufacturing
Execution System (MES) model for the fabless semiconductor industry to monitor and
track its global supply chain using Camstar’s InSite Manufacturing Execution System.
Al Safavi, Production Systems Manager and MES Architect at Genesis, led the company’s
implementation team in designing and deploying the unique MES model.
Genesis Microchip is a leading supplier of display image processors for the LCD
Monitor and Flat Panel TV markets. In order to meet its customers’ expectation for
flawless processors in high volumes, Genesis employs a global outsource manufacturing
strategy based on precision, cost effectiveness, and exceptional flexibility.
“Tracking the lots, and orders and instructions against these lots, having real-time
visibility of the inventory and lot genealogy, while working on continuous yield
improvement and cycle time reduction - all these in a very high volume production
environment - posed significant challenges,” said Al Safavi. “We now have live production
information from our supply chain — schedules, product data, plant data and status
— synchronized and available to Genesis almost real time.”
Genesis implemented Camstar’s InSite Manufacturing Execution System (MES) to support
its large product mix and multiple vendor sites. Tightly integrated with its Oracle
ERP system, Genesis now sends electronic work orders, instructions, and manufacturing
directives to its vendors, and vendors report back actual production data, including
quantities produced and key quality and test results. The data provides valuable
stage yield, operations yield, cycle time and other performance indicators that
can be used to compare vendors in the global network who make the same products.
“All MES systems track lots,” said Mohammad Tafazzoli, Senior Vice President of
Operations at Genesis Microchip. “The reason we chose Camstar as our partner was
because of the flexibility and configurability of the InSite product that allow us to tailor the system to fit our exact needs of collaborating with our global
supplier sites in a virtual factory environment.”
“The outsourced competency model calls for a high degree of process coordination
and collaboration to keep operations on track,” said Scott Toney, President and
CEO of Camstar
Systems. “Genesis Microchip’s implementation of Camstar’s InSite
clearly demonstrates the unprecedented value of manufacturing control and visibility
of the supply chain to companies who outsource production. We are proud that Camstar’s
InSite is playing a key role in Genesis Microchip’s innovative supply chain management
processes.”
