In the InSite system, a resource is the entity responsible for accomplishing a packet
of work within an operation. While resource is a term typically applied to equipment,
there are times when the meaning can be broader in scope, including human resources
and even subcontractor activity. Below is a description of how this applies to equipment.
How Equipment is Tracked
The InSite system tracks equipment as events occur. Generally, these events are
recorded as state changes in the equipment (Up vs. Down, Running vs. Idle, in repair,
etc.) and as ‘runs’ on the tool. A run is the processing of one or more lots together
on the equipment to accomplish the primary manufacturing activity for that operation,
such as die bond, burn in or electrical test. A run is first ‘setup’ on the equipment,
then starts with a Track-In and completes with a Track-Out. Data is then collected,
and SPC may be reported and recommendations made for the tool to shut down or undergo
Preventative Maintenance.
Why Resource Tracking is Vital to Factory Management
The factory that uses the full equipment tracking capabilities of InSite | Semiconductor
TAP Edition has a rich body of information about how the factory is running, where
issues are occurring and a detailed history of all past activities. This information
facilitates reporting on equipment utilization, employee activity, product performance
and customer spec compliance.
Without this level of information, it would be virtually impossible to determine
true performance values for equipment and operators. This is especially true in
situations where a single lot is run on more than one tool (such as wire bond),
and where more than one lot may be run at once in an operation (such as burn in).
Timely information, accurately reported, becomes the nervous system of the factory,
providing control information from management to the shop floor and feedback from
manufacturing to the decision makers.
